About Fairy

The Fairy brand first appeared in 1898 when the trademark for ‘Fairy’ was registered in the UK by Thomas Hedley & Company, having bought the rights from the Northern Soap Company, on 28th December in London.

Fairy Liquid was launched in regional test markets in a can with a screw top closure (in Birmingham, UK, 1959) before moving to a plastic bottle container in 1960, when the launch went national in the UK. It immediately became a leading household name in the UK with its TV advertising campaign featuring a mother and child with the famous “For hands that do dishes are as soft as your face” line and jingle.

Since then, Fairy has consistently won the vote from mums and key opinion leaders (it has been regularly nominated by Which? magazine in the UK as the best buy for washing up liquids) and has translated it’s superior performance into dishwashing tablets.

Today, 579 bottles of Fairy Liquid are produced per minute – over 10 million gallons of Fairy Liquid a year. It is as indispensible to the household as it ever has been, lasting 50% longer than the next best-selling brand - one bottle of Fairy Liquid once washed 14,763 dirty plates, a world record!
